Driving across Iowa along Interstate 80, it can seem like there’s not much to see in the Hawkeye State. But Iowa is full of offbeat adventures, world’s largest things and even a wacky roadside stop or two. In Avoca, Iowa, you’ll find another unusual attraction: a Volkswagen Beetle Spider.
Standing roughly 10 feet in the air, this crawly creation can just barely be seen over the nearby waving cornfields. As you get closer, you’ll notice this sculpture has some unusual features. This unique piece of yard decoration was made from the painted body of a Volkswagen Beetle with eight tall, spindly legs added on.
In the late 1980s, local siblings Travis and Angela Campbell built this unusual sculpture. The spider was a gift for their father, Darwin, whose welding shop is located on the land behind the spider.

Plan Your Visit to the Volkswagen Beetle Spider
If you happen to be driving I-80 in western Iowa, the Volkswagen Beetle Spider is definitely worth a detour. From the interstate, take Exit 40 and head south toward Avoca. You’ll find the spider after passing through the center of town on a quiet, residential property.
In recent years, the family added a metal dragon and dinosaur next to the spider for an additional fun photo op.
Tip: This sculpture is technically located on residential property so remember to be respectful when you stop for a visit.
