Eats: Tony Packo’s

As I quickly learned, there aren’t a lot of interesting stops heading west along I-80 from Chicago to Connecticut, but one sunny afternoon of our road trip we stopped in Toledo, Ohio for a bite to eat and were charmed by Tony Packo’s.

We opted for a stop at the location across the street from Toledo’s Fifth Third Field (home of the Toledo Mud Hens) and ordered the fan favorite Original Hungarian Dog, which was really more a chili dog but still super delicious after so much time in the car.

One of Tony Packo’s claims to fame comes from the hit TV show M*A*S*H when  Corporal Max Klinger (played by native Toledoan Jamie Farr) tells a newscaster, “If you’re ever in Toledo, Ohio, on the Hungarian side of town, Tony Packo’s got the greatest Hungarian hot dogs. Thirty-five cents…” And thus an Ohio icon was born.

If quirky attractions are more your speed, spend some time wandering around Tony Packo’s and admiring their collection of signed hot dog buns. Yes, you heard that right. You’ll find buns signed by everyone from Tori Amos to Barack Obama and the Mud Hens mascot Muddy and preserved in plastic frames. Kind of gross, kind of awesome.
