A Paul Bunyan Muffler Man in Chesire, CT

A few weekends ago I took an impromptu trip to Connecticut for my grandmother’s 90th birthday. She had no idea we were coming and, needless to say, it was one of the best surprises I’ve been a part of in a long time.

On the way to her house in Wolcott, I made my obliging parents take a quick detour to stop at this Muffler Man in Cheshire. Before that weekend I had no idea that muffler men are apparently a nationally present roadside attraction (stay tuned for a separate post on this) and am now on a quest to find more of them.

This particular gentleman can be found outside of the House of Doors, yielding a large America flag. The 26-foot-tall Paul Bunyan-themed muffler man was erected in the early 1980s by the business’ owners and—after some controversy amongst townspeople—replaced his axe with an American flag, claiming a “flagpole” could legally be any height.
