Exploring Michigan: South Haven

Last week I shared a bit about the town of Glenn—the southwest Michigan town my family has been visiting for the past 20 years. Just south of Glenn is South Haven, a much bigger beach town we’ve been driving down to for years for groceries, dinners out, ice cream cones or trips to the public beach.

One of the favorite South Haven landmarks is the bright red lighthouse at the end of the North Beach pier. But over the years, I’ve amassed quite a few other favorite stops around town:

South Haven Favorites

  • Black River Books — This little shop has been one of my favorite used bookstores for years. They also have a great local, Michigan-based section. Be sure to say hello to shop dogs Dewey and Booker when you visit!
  • Sherman’s Ice Cream — Quite possibly the best ice cream I’ve ever tasted—and I’ve tasted a lot of ice cream.
  • Clementine’s — Always a crowd pleaser, we typically avoid Clementine’s during the summer tourist season, but if you do brave the line, the onion rings are a must.
  • Kal Haven Trail — This trail is a gorgeous way to spend the afternoon no matter what the season. Rent a bike in town or bring your own, and head toward Kalamazoo.
