Learning letterpress at the Art Center

I’ve been dying to take a letterpress class for quite some time now. So when a friend and I spotted a listing for a two-day class at the Des Moines Art Center last month, we jumped at the chance to spend a weekend learning about letterpress.

And the experience was nothing short of amazing. From the time we showed up on Saturday morning until we packed up our still-drying prints on Sunday afternoon, we were essentially free to do what we wanted and create what we liked. The process of letterpress itself is fairly simple once you get the hand of the spacing and inking so the only real hurdle is your own creativity.

One of my favorite prints I created was a stylized list of some of the main east-to-west streets in Downtown Des Moines. While I designed about eight different print throughout the weekend, this is probably the one I’m most proud of (especially because a co-worker of mine already asked to hang one in their offices).
