Unique Things to Do in Gulf Shores & Orange Beach, Alabama
Bike Along a Boardwalk in Gulf State Park

Whether you’re an avid cyclist or just an occasional biker, it’s definitely worth hopping on two wheels to explore Gulf State Park. Named the best recreation trail in the country, the Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail is a 29-mile paved trail system that helps visitors see a slice of the park’s 6,150 acres. Whether you’re peddling or walking, get a new perspective on the area’s wetlands and marshes from the vantage point of one of the park’s many boardwalks.
And don’t worry if you didn’t bring your bike with you! Rentals are available at a number of places throughout Gulf State Park through the free bike share program. You can also rent through a local outfitter like Beach Bike Rentals. The team at this shop was so helpful in finding the right ride and even offers electric-assist bikes for a little extra boost.

Explore the Oddities at Barber Marina
If you’re looking for an unusual spot along Alabama’s Gulf Coast, look no further than Barber Marina. Located about 35 minutes from Gulf Shores and Orange Beach, this functioning marina is also home to all sorts of unique installations, from Bamahenge and the Lady in the Lake to dinosaurs, knights and so much more.
Take a Class from Sand Castle University

Sure, you probably built a sand castle or two as a kid. But now thanks to Sand Castle University, you can build sand sculptures like a pro.
This local business provides everything you need to make a next-level sand castle, including hands-on expert instruction. All of their classes are private so they’ll be tailored specifically to and for your group, and their instructors come directly to your preferred beach location.
We took an hour-long Sand 101 class and had so much fun learning the professional way to build a traditional sand castle. If you’re already a pro (or have taken a class before), Sand Castle University also offers Sand 201 classes that include more advanced or collaborative creations. This is definitely an all-ages vacation activity you don’t want to skip!
Tour Fort Morgan State Historic Site

If you like a side of history with your beach vacation, it’s definitely worth the drive to explore Fort Morgan State Historic Site. Overlooking Mobile Bay, this historic site is not only an interesting piece of U.S. maritime history but also a unique architectural marvel to discover.
Following the War of 1812, the United States moved to create more coastal defense forts, and construction began on Fort Morgan in 1819. During that period, enslaved African Americans moved more than 46 million cubic yards of bricks to construct the fort’s thick walls. Due to its isolated location, the fort wasn’t completed until 1834.
While the fort was active during four wars — the U.S. Civil War, Spanish-American War, World War I and World War II — it played a significant role in the Battle of Mobile Bay during the Civil War. On August 5, 1864, Union Admiral David Farragut and his fleet attacked the heavily protected bay. After a two-week siege, the soldiers at Fort Morgan eventually surrendered to the Union forces.

Fort Morgan was officially turned over to the state of Alabama in 1946, and was recognized as a National Historic Landmark in 1960. Today, visitors can explore the historic fort, learn about the military history of the area at the complex’s museum, and enjoy the natural areas around Mobile Point.
Tip: Fort Morgan State Historic Site is located on the western end of Highway 180, 22 miles west of Gulf Shores. From Gulf Shores it takes about half an hour to reach Fort Morgan so be sure to plan accordingly. Consider making a day of it by taking the scenic drive slow, stopping to eat at a local restaurant, or exploring outdoor spaces like Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge.

Relax with Hammock Time Tiki Tours

Take a load off and let your worries slip away with a ride aboard Hammock Time Tiki Tours. There are plenty of offbeat things to do in Gulf Shores that involve boating, but this was definitely one of my favorites! Not only is the boat’s captain Glenn an incredible host, but he’s also incredibly knowledgeable about the area.
Glenn has great recommendations for how to spend your time, and will drive you around while you relax in a hammock, hop off the boat to grab a Bushwacker, or beach on one of the nearby islands for you to explore. Lounging in the hammock while soaking up the sunshine is a must, especially if you’ve had a jam-packed adventure on Alabama’s beaches.

Relax on Alabama’s White Sand Beaches

As a native Midwesterner, time at the beach is always high on my list of ways to spend time in Gulf Shores. And the beaches along Alabama’s Gulf Coast are truly exceptional.
The beaches in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach are incredibly clean with plenty of space to spend the day, even during the busy season. Plus, if you enjoy searching for shells, you’re sure to find some great discoveries on your beach walks.
Fun Fact: The sand on Alabama’s beaches is so soft and white because it’s actually crushed quartz that washed down from the Appalachian Mountains millions of years ago.
Sip on a Shark Attack at The Hangout

There are lots of incredible restaurants in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach. But there’s only one where you can order a world-famous Shark Attack and that’s The Hangout. Made with Malibu Coconut Rum, blue Curaçao and pineapple juice, this fun beach beverage is served with a plastic shark full of bright red grenadine. Simply tip the shark upside down into your glass to see how this cocktail got its name!

Ride on a Gyrocopter

Before visiting the Gulf Shores area, I had never heard of a gyrocopter. But after my experience with Magni Gyroflight I can’t recommend this unique way to experience the area enough. These unique two-passenger aircrafts provide a breathtaking view of the Gulf Coast from a much lower vantage point that you’ll experience on other aerial tours.
Currently, Magni Gyroflight offers 30- and 60-minute flights out of the Foley Municipal Airport.

Enjoy a Beach Picnic

Take the stress out of your beach vacation with a stunning picnic put together by The Beach Moms. While this talented local concierge company offers plenty of other services (like grocery shopping and personal chef services), their beach picnics are truly an unforgettable experience.
Simply tell them where to set up and they’ll take care of the rest. Their two-hour picnics include all sorts of delicious snacks and beverages, comfortable and stylish seating, and even a bluetooth speaker to play your own music. We were blown away by the attention to detail and incredible hospitality of The Beach Moms, and I’ll definitely be looking into their other offerings the next time I visit the Gulf Shores area!

Enjoy a Daiquiri Flight at High Tide Daiquiris

What’s better than a frosty beverage after a hot afternoon at the beach? Thankfully, at High Tide Daiquiris & Mimosas you don’t have to choose between their many delicious flavors! Instead, order one of their delicious daiquiri flights that allow you to sample smaller sizes of four of their frozen favorites.
High Tide Daiquiris & Mimosas, 408 W. Beach Boulevard in Gulf Shores, Alabama
Go Parasailing

Even if parasailing hasn’t been your bucket list, I can’t recommend booking an experience with Sky Surfer Parasailing enough. This was an incredible activity and a great way to see Alabama’s Beaches in a new way.
While this might not be the best activity for people with a fear of heights, the team at Sky Surfer made me feel incredibly at ease and made me the entire experience a breeze. After arriving at the boat’s dock, we climbed aboard, received some safety and logistical instructions, and then we were flying high above the crystal clear water. One of the things that surprised me most about parasailing is how serene it was once you’re in the air — just like being attached to a giant kite!

Putter Around on Beachside Circle Boats

If you’re looking for a unique way to get on the water, but don’t have previous boating experience, consider booking a rental with Beachside Circle Boats. These unique circular boats remind me a bit of bumper boats, but with much more control.
Even if you get stuck spinning in circles at first, just try not to get the giggles. I dare you! Once you get the hang of the steering, it’s easy to putter around the bay and explore the area in a new way.
Whether you want to enjoy some time on the water or beach on one of the area’s tiny islands for a relaxing afternoon, Beachside Circle Boats are a fun (and unusual) way to experience Gulf Shores and Orange Beach. Since these small watercraft are portable, they can easily be launched from a variety of local spots.
Plan Your Own Cocktail Crawl

Celebrate your vacation with a night out at The Wharf and a drink at some of the area’s unique cocktail bars.
For the best kept secret in Orange Beach, head to 8 Reale, an upscale speakeasy located behind a vault door near a local jewelry store. Be sure to check their social media daily for the secret code to get inside!
If a girls’ night is in your future, check out Gulf Babe Wine Boutique. This perfectly pink bar serves a full menu of wines and cocktails alongside light bites perfect for snacking while you catch up with your friends.

Ride the Ferris Wheel at The Wharf

While you’re in the area, hop on the Ferris Wheel at The Wharf. A ride around the wheel is fun way to add extra sparkle to your shopping trip or evening out — no matter your age!
Pro Tip: Time your Ferris Wheel ride with sunset to watch the sun sink over the nearby Portage Creek.
Ferris Wheel at The Wharf, 23101 Canal Road in Orange Beach, Alabama
Create Something New at The Hot Shop

If you enjoy hands-on activities and opportunities to create, consider booking a class with The Hot Shop at the Coastal Arts Center of Orange Beach. Opened in 2009, The Hot Shop serves as a place for visitors to watch demos from resident glass artists then try out glassblowing for themselves.
During a recent visit to Gulf Shores, I participated in a “Make Your Own” Glass Blowing Lesson where I created a colorful glass flower. While the prospect of handling molten glass initially felt a little intimidating, the artists at The Hot Shop did a phenomenal job with hands-on instruction and ensured that I created a piece I was proud of.
Pro Tip: If you’re visiting Orange Beach from afar, The Hot Shop will mail your finished piece home to you once it’s been fired and cooled.

Play Mini Golf at Pirate’s Island Adventure Golf

Add a little friendly competition to your Gulf Shores adventure with a round or two of mini golf at Pirate’s Island Adventure Golf. This whimsical pirate-themed course is challenging enough to hold your interest, but not so challenging that non-golfers will be frustrated.
During a recent visit to Gulf Shores, we had so much fun putting around and learning about all sorts of pirate lore along the way.

Snap a Photo with a Silly Statue

It’s no secret that I love a giant attraction, and Gulf Shores is full of them! Stop to pose for a photo with the super-sized shark that serves as the entrance of Souvenir City or the oversized octopus atop the T-Shirt Factory before picking up a souvenir. Then make a silly face with the giant Gulf shrimp at Shrimpy’s Grill and Golf.
Explore the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo

If you need a break from the beach, head to the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo for the afternoon. Get your steps in while wandering the zoo’s exhibits and seeing the more than 115 species that call the zoo home.
While this is a smaller zoo, you could still easily spend a full afternoon exploring the different areas and activities. Especially if you’re looking for offbeat things to do in Gulf Shores with kids, the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo is a great stop. Be sure to check the daily schedule to see what animal adventures — from giraffe feedings to sloth meet-and-greats — are available during your visit.

Find Inspiration at The Coastal Arts Center of Orange Beach

Fans of the arts will definitely want to make time for a visit to the Coastal Arts Center of Orange Beach during their time in Alabama’s Beaches. This stunning space overlooking Wolf Bay is home to expansive gallery space that showcases the work of both local and regional artists. Find a piece to take home with you or simply discover a new source of inspiration.
Want a hands-on creative experience? Consider booking a glassblowing class at The Hot Shop or wheel-throwing class at The Clay Studio.

Getting to Gulf Shores, Alabama

While I’ve driven to Alabama’s Beaches a number of times, this part of the Gulf Coast is now more accessible than ever. In 2025, Allegiant Airlines began flying to Gulf Shores International Airport at Jack Edwards Field, making a beach getaway that much closer (particularly for folks in the Midwest). Plus, you really can’t beat an airport with a LuLu’s outpost!
We’re lucky to have a year-round nonstop flight on Allegiant Airlines between Des Moines and Gulf Shores. Now I can go from central Iowa to the Gulf Coast in less than three hours!
Want to know more about Allegiant’s offerings? Check the Allegiant Airlines flight schedule for routes near you.
