Road Trip 2013: Carson City to San Francisco

After a quick stop at Starbucks and a visit to the Nevada State Capitol, we were ready to start the last leg of our trip to California. We decided to dip down on Lincoln Highway 50 for a more scenic drive and to stop off at Lake Tahoe. The morning was gorgeous and the view of the lake with mountains looming on the horizon was absolutely breathtaking.

Unfortunately I learned that my stomach doesn’t enjoy high altitudes quite as much as I do and I spent the majority of our “scenic” drive with my eyes closed. Thankfully we stopped for lunch in Sacramento at Jamie’s Bar & Grill, a dimly lit pub featured on the the Food Network’s “Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives.” I don’t want to exaggerate, but the garlic steak sandwich actually may have changed my life. If you’re in the area, a stop is a definite must!

Around an hour later we were finally in San Francisco and after a quick stop at our hotel we ventured into the city in search of a much-needed drink. Once we heard about Trick Dog, a Pantone-themed bar, we knew it warranted a stop. Though the bar is fairly hidden, with no real signage, the interior of the bar is filled with refurbished furniture and antique-looking fixtures, giving the entire space the feel of a 1920s era speakeasy. I ordered a Grandma’s Sweater (Pantone #787), made with gin, Zucca Rabarbaro, blood orange, lime, mint and bitter lemon soda.

Next we headed next door to Salumeria for a fresh salami sandwich and some snacks before heading back for the evening. But since a few of us have a major sweet tooth, we decided to stroll the few blocks from our hotel to Ghirardelli Square for ice cream sundaes and a view of the bay at nighttime. Can you tell we spent a lot of the trip eating?
