Hike at Pikes Peak State Park

Soak up the beauty of the Mississippi River bluffs by exploring Pikes Peak State Park. Whether you’re looking for a place to camp for the weekend or somewhere to take a quick hike, this beautiful state park is worth a visit.
The park has 11 miles of trails that weave up and down the riverfront bluffs, offering stunning views of the Mississippi River and neighboring town of McGregor no matter the season. If you’re looking for a short adventure, I recommend the half-mile boardwalk trail to see Bridal Veil Falls. While this trail is largely on paved surfaces or wooden boardwalks, be aware that there are quite a few stairs between the trailhead and falls viewing point. Or, consider taking a short hike through the woods to see Bear Mound, an effigy land mass built by indigenous peoples.
Even if you don’t have time for a hike, the views from the park’s scenic overlook are absolutely stunning, particularly in the fall when the leaves begin to change colors.

Visit the Sherman Swift Tower

Have you heard of Althea Sherman? Even if you’re an avid birder, you may not know about this nationally-known ornithologist who called Clayton County home in the late 1800s. While Sherman had many accomplishments, she was most well known for her research on the chimney swift, a small grey bird native to the area.
To aid her study, Sherman even constructed a 28-foot-tall building with an artificial chimney in an attempt to attract the birds to roost. The modern Sherman Swift Tower is a replica of Sherman’s 1915 tower, and was constructed with the hope that chimney swifts would nest there to continue her legacy.
