Climbing the Cordova Park Observation Tower

A few weeks ago, after heading south in search of pie, a rainy afternoon miraculously turned into a sunny one just as we found ourselves nearing Lake Red Rock. Wanting to get out of the car to enjoy the now significantly sunnier day, we happened upon the Cordova Park Observation Tower.

Located on the north side of Lake Red Rock, the observation deck was constructed around a now defunct water tower. Take a climb to the top (and in our case, try to work off some pie) for a fabulous view of the Des Moines River Valley and Lake Red Rock. At 170 steps, this is the tallest observation tower in the Midwest.

If you visit the Cordova Park Observation Tower

Tourist tip: Be sure to bring quarters! It costs 50 cents to get inside the tower’s gate.
