Summer is the perfect time to plan a road trip! This year we’re opting to stay a bit closer to home by exploring Iowa and its neighboring states, which is why I was so excited to pick up a copy of the recently released 100 Things to Do in Nebraska Before You Die, written by my friends Tim and Lisa Trudell of The Walking Tourists.
If anyone is qualified to share some of the state’s most bucket-list-worthy spots, it’s Tim and Lisa. In addition to their blog, this is the Trudell’s third book about exploring Nebraska. You might recognize their other titles 100 Things to Do in Omaha Before You Die and Unique Eats and Eateries of Omaha.
Their latest book is the perfect resource to get you thinking about a Nebraska road trip. Broken up into digestible sections, the book is perfect for browsing and learning about the state’s varied history. Unsurprisingly, I especially enjoyed the section about unique Nebraska attractions and roadside oddities.

My Nebraska Favorites: A 100 Things Teaser

No. 13: Taste a Nebraska Original with a Runza
Even if fast food is typically your jam, Runza is a Nebraska institution. If you’re not familiar, a Runza is a made ground seasoned ground beef, onions and cabbage stuffed instead a freshly baked bun.
They have a few different varieties including a new vegetarian option. But my personal favorite thing about Runza is their “Frings,” a side that combines their crinkle cut fries and onion rings so you don’t have to choose between the two!
No. 30: Explore the World at the Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium
I’d heard friends rave about Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium for years before I finally visited myself. And there’s a good reason it’s so popular!
Not only is this zoo expertly designed but it also has a huge variety of different habitats and buildings to explore. On our most recent visit, we spent hours exploring only a handful of them, including the Desert Dome and Suzanne and Walter Scott Aquarium. No matter the season, there’s something wild to see here!
No. 63: Cross the Plains at the Archway in Kearney
Whether you’re spending time in Kearney or roadtripping across the state along I-80, a stop at The Archway is a must! Built over I-80, this unique museum has something for travelers of all ages. Not only is this attraction a great place to stop and stretch your legs, but it’s also a great way to learn about the area’s history. Explore the exhibits on the outdoor campus or, if you have more time, go through the interactive museum to learn about prairie history, the Lincoln Highway and more.
