Offbeat Things to Do in Edgewood, Iowa
Learn About Local History at the Edgewood Museum

Dive deep into local history at the Edgewood Museum. This volunteer-run initiative was formed with the goal of preserving Edgewood’s community history for generations to come. The Edgewood Museum opened in 2017 and has since received hundreds of donated artifacts from the community over the years.

Explore the rotating exhibits to learn about the early days of Edgewood and some of the families that made the community what it is today. I loved looking through the old school memorabilia and pieces from small businesses that once dotted Edgewood’s downtown.
You can also find pieces of local history in the wild like the WCTU Water Fountain on the corner of East Madison and North Washington Streets. Erected by the Women’s Christian Temperance Union in the early 1900s, the water fountain was installed with the hopes that access to a cold drink of water would prevent men from quenching their thirsts in the local taverns.

Fill Your Freezer at Edgewood Locker

Local meat lockers are a staple of small town culture, but it’s easy to see why folks drive from all over to visit the Edgewood Locker. Opened in 1966, the Edgewood Locker has been a community staple for almost 60 years. Not only does the Edgewood Locker produce some seriously delicious cuts of meat, sausage and more, but now in its third generation of family ownership, this Edgewood small business has been an enduring local presence.
In addition to custom butchering and packaging services, the locker also has a large retail store with plenty of product available to the public. Pop in and stock up on everything from fresh beef and pork to brats, jerky, meat sticks and more. Plus, they’ve got a wide variety of snacks, seasonings and other locally-produced foods to help round out your barbecue.
Fun Fact: In 2024, the Edgewood Locker produced more than 1.1 million pounds of sausage.

Opt Outside at Bixby State Preserve

Enjoy the outdoors with a visit to Bixby State Preserve. This 184-acre rugged forest preserve is a nice place for a walk in the woods or a serene picnic.
In 1854, the Bixby family established their homestead on this site. In 1926, it was purchased by the Iowa Conservation Commission to become a public park, and now it’s an unstaffed satellite site of Backbone State Park.
Bixby State Preserve is also known for its ice cave, which is located near the picnic shelter area. Keep an eye out for a large, partially mined fissure in the stone where a cold stream of air blows and ice accumulates even in the summer months.
