Offbeat Things to Do in Guttenberg, Iowa
Admire Public Art Along the Riverwalk

As a river town, it only makes sense that the banks of the Mississippi River have been transformed for Guttenberg locals and visitors alike to enjoy. Not only is there a paved trail that runs the length of the riverfront through downtown, but you’ll also find all sorts of public art pieces — from sculptures to murals painted on the sidewalks — to enjoy during your stroll.
Take a little detour to the observation tower near Lock and Dam No. 10 to get a closer look at how this vital piece of river infrastructure works.

Visit the Guttenberg Aquarium & Fish Hatchery

Pop into the Guttenberg Aquarium and Hatchery to learn more about the fish and other wildlife that inhabit the Mississippi River. Managed by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, the local hatchery is responsible for surveying the local fish, turtle and mussel populations each year.
Inside the aquarium you’ll find a variety of Main Channel fish like Catfish, Walleye and Smallmouth Bass as well as other animals like snapping turtles. This is also a great place to learn more about water ecology and how all of the different organisms in the river contribute to its overall health and vitality. Plus, the aquarium has some seriously silly, interactive fish jokes, which I appreciated.

Stop by the Clayton County Freedom Rock

In 1999, artist Ray “Bubba” Sorensen II began transforming a nearly 60-ton boulder in Menlo, Iowa into a memorial to thank veterans for their years of service. Every year in early May, Sorensen paints a new patriotic tribute on the boulder to honor troops just in time for Memorial Day.
But the impact of the Freedom Rock hasn’t stopped there. In addition to his original tribute, Sorensen has created Freedom Rocks in all of Iowa’s 99 counties, including a 100th rock at Adventureland in Altoona, Iowa.
The Clayton County Freedom Rock was installed in 2018 and features patriotic symbols as well as a tribute to former Governor Samuel Merrill who was from the McGregor area.

The Fish Shack

It’s no exaggeration when I say that lunch at The Fish Shack is quite possibly one of the most interesting meals I’ve had in awhile. This Guttenberg eatery is located just feet from the waters of the Mississippi River on a floating barge. Half kitchen space with service counter and half screened-in dining area, The Fish Shack is like no experience I’d had before.
Just observing the lunch crowd, it’s easy to see why this place is so busy. The restaurant serves a limited menu of Midwestern classics and fresh fish dishes. During my visit, I opted for the fried cod with a side of The Fish Shack’s tavern cucumbers. After ordering, diners either wait for their to-go order or snag a seat in the screened seating area. The decor is both eclectic, inspired by the riverfront, and minimalist, allowing diners to admire the natural beauty before them.
Pro Tip: The Fish Shack is a cash-only business so be sure to come prepared.
The Fish Shack is open seasonally and typically welcomes diners between May and October.

Guttenberg Brewing Company

I love trying out craft breweries when I travel, and Guttenberg Brewing Company definitely has to be on your to-visit list if you’re exploring northeast Iowa. Opened in 2022, Guttenberg Brewing Company was the creation of founder Kathryn Klaes when she was just 24 years old, making her likely one of the youngest brewery owners in the country.
Since opening, the brewery has become a community staple with quality craft beer, great food, live music, and even community events. During my visit, I tried a flight of the brewery’s current offerings and couldn’t resist ordering the jumbo soft pretzel.
Guttenberg Brewing Company also has a great, dog-friendly patio that’s the perfect place to enjoy a pint during the warmer months.

Promised Land Winery

Head about 15 minutes south of downtown Guttenberg into the rolling Iowa hills to discover Promised Land Winery. Set against a serene rural backdrop, this Iowa winery is a great place to gather with a group or enjoy a glass of wine solo.
With a large tasting room and sprawling outdoor space, Promised Land Winery is a destination in itself. Sample a variety of Iowa-made red and white wines, and enjoy one of the winery’s specialty pizzas. Sit back, listen to the live music that’s scheduled throughout the week, and soak in the beautiful Iowa backdrop.
