Tour the Territorial Capital Museum

Did you know that Lecompton was originally proposed as the capital of Kansas? In fact, the Kansas State Capitol building was originally planned for this site.

While construction on the building was started using a $50,000 appropriation from the U.S. Congress, only the first floor had been completed when the Lecompton Constitution was defeated in the House of Representatives. This meant that Kansas did not enter the Union as a slave-owning state with Lecompton as its proposed capital. With that, the full construction of the ornate building was never realized.

While it has had many other functions over the years, today the building is home to the Territorial Capital Museum. The museum contains three floors of artifacts highlighting pre-Civil War Kansas to more modern day community history.

Experience the Constitution Hall

Dive deep into the history of the Lecompton Constitution and learn about the role this small Kansas community played in the Civil War with a visit to Constitution Hall. Now a National Historic Landmark, this modest structure was the site of the Lecompton Constitution’s drafting. That historic event also included the arrival of a large antislavery delegation which marched into the community to protest its proslavery convention.

While the constitution was ultimately defeated, the tumult caused by the opposing pro-slavery and “free-state” delegations had a lasting impact on Kansas’ government and journey to become recognized as a U.S. state. See history up-close as you explore the rooms where it happened.

Visit the Territorial Democratic Headquarters

Visit the Territorial Democratic Headquarters, which served as the home base for the Democratic Party during Kansas’ Territorial period spanning from 1854 to 1861. The structure was originally built in the 1850s by an Italian stone mason and was believed to have been used as a residence for a brief time.

However, the reason it has remained as a part of Lecompton’s history is because of the influential men who gathered here to discuss political strategies and make decisions that would go on to shape Kansas’ politics and government for decades to come.

While Lecompton is full of local history, you won’t find a ton of places to stay in this small community. My recommendation if you’re exploring the area and plan to spend the night is to head to neighboring Lawrence, Kansas where you’ll find many options for hotels, short-term rentals and more.
