Exploring Iowa: West Bend, Iowa

One of my favorite parts about the mini road trips we take are the tiny towns that we visit along the way. In this particular case, we found ourselves in West Bend, Iowa to visit the Grotto of the Redemption. But as lunchtime neared and our stomachs began to grumble, we knew we needed to do a little exploring.

With just over 700 people, West Bend is one of those tiny towns that truly embodies rural Iowa. We stopped for lunch at the Wagon Wheel Cafe, a restaurant where I’m not exaggerating when I say that everyone knew each other and the waitresses barely even had to ask for regulars’ orders. After a delicious—albeit huge—tenderloin sandwich with a side of crinkle cut fries, we hopped back in the car and headed west to our next adventure.
