I’ve visited the Field of Dreams before to celebrate the iconic film’s 25th anniversary. But when I realized I’d be passing through Dubuque, Iowa on my way to spend the weekend in Madison, Wisconsin, I couldn’t resist a quick detour to Dyersville.
As you drive the back roads out of town, the field is almost entirely obscured by cornstalks. Suddenly you round a corner and the Field of Dreams suddenly flies into view. Stepping out of the car on a hot summer afternoon with the corn towering high, it’s easy to see how people have been inspired by the magic of these fields for more than 25 years.
If there’s no special events happening at the field, you’re free to explore and play a pick-up game at your leisure. Be sure to bring your own ball, bat, and gloves since the site is fairly minimal. However, there are bathrooms and a small gift shop where you can pick up a souvenir.
Regardless of the time you have to visit, it’s worth a quick stop to marvel at the place that still makes people ask, “Is this heaven?” Nope, it’s Iowa.
