After a few hours of winding through the Wisconsin countryside, I shouldn’t have been surprised by the charm of the little town of New Glarus. With a population of slightly more than 2,000 and a rich Swiss history, New Glarus has a charmingly small downtown with a huge variety of places to eat and shop.
We stopped for a late lunch at Cow & Quince, a community-owned restaurant that wowed us with its quirky decor and—I’m so sorry, Iowa—the best bacon I’ve had in my entire life. After eating we wandered around town and contemplated how much chocolate and/or cheese we could manage to take home with us without anything melting.
And, of course, just south on WI-69 is New Glarus Brewing, makers of the famous Spotted Cow and home to a great outdoor tasting patio.
